Understanding CoQ10 and Sperm Motility

Last updated December 17, 2013

Some CoQ10 Basics

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is an enzyme found within human blood cells. Because it is produced naturally by the body, it is not technically classified as a vitamin, but it plays an important role in preserving blood levels of other vitamins such as vitamin E and vitamin C. It is also a powerful antioxidant and people have been taking it for years to improve cognitive function and heart health. Even though CoQ10 is naturally occurring within the body, studies have shown that levels drop with age, sometimes beginning as young as age 20, meaning much of the adult population may be deficient in CoQ10.

Male Infertility and CoQ10

Recent research has uncovered yet another reason it is vital to ensure that CoQ10 levels in the body remain optimal, particularly for its male users. As it turns out, the majority of men suffering from infertility due to low sperm motility also have lower than normal levels of CoQ10 in their seminal fluid. It has been shown that oxidative stress significantly impairs sperm motility, and having healthy levels of CoQ10 greatly reduces levels of oxidative stress within the seminal fluid.

It is recommended that men who suffer from low sperm motility supplement with 200 milligrams of Androenergen CoQ10 daily. In a controlled study, men who supplemented with CoQ10 at that level for three months showed significant increases in antioxidant enzyme activity within the seminal fluid as well as reduced levels of oxidative stress compared to men who took a placebo. There was also a significant correlation between CoQ10 supplementation and sperm motility.
